There are many, many ways to go about designing a space – so many ways in fact that it may be difficult to know where to begin. If you’re having trouble getting started, this blog is for you!
One of my favorite methods is to design around an inspiration piece. In this series of blogs, I’ll take you step by step through the process, from initial concept all the way through to completion, showing pictures of the redesigned space.
So where do we begin? Step 1: you need to find an inspiration piece.
What’s an inspiration piece? Anything you love the look and feel of. Sounds simple, but this is where many people falter, the main reason being that people are looking for something that’s appropriate for a room. That may seem intuitive but it’s completely wrong and it limits your options.
An inspiration piece can be ANYTHING that you love. Anything. A favorite shoe, a figurine, a DVD cover, a bracelet, a photograph, etc. etc. You get the idea, and don’t worry yet what it means for the room – just find something that inspires you – and this is important – you must LOVE it. It can’t be something you sort of like, you need to love it.
For this series, I’ll use the example of my daughter’s nursery. I wanted a space that was feminine and pretty but not traditional or something you’d see anywhere else. Beyond that, I had no idea what I wanted to do until I came across this in a magazine:
It literally took my breath away. It’s fresh, flirtly, feminine and beautiful – exactly what I wanted the nursery to feel like. So this was my inspiration piece, my starting point, and in the next series of blogs, I’ll show you how I designed my favorite room of all time around it.
