Art Size Guide: Tape It Out Before You Buy
Artwork dimensions can be surprisingly difficult to visualize from a product listing. Before committing to a piece, use painter’s tape to see exactly how its size and proportions will feel on your wall.
Why Painter’s Tape Works
A measurement such as 36×42 inches may sound substantial when you read it online, yet it can still look unexpectedly small once it is placed on a large wall. Painter’s tape turns an abstract measurement into a true-to-size visual reference.
It also lets you evaluate the artwork in relation to nearby furniture, architectural features and the room as a whole before you spend any money.
How to Test an Artwork Size

Measure the Artwork
Note the full width and height, including the frame when one will be used.

Tape the Outline
Use a level and low-tack painter’s tape to mark the exact dimensions on the wall.

View the outline from the main entrance and the places where you normally sit or stand.
What the Different Sizes Feel Like
A small accent size best suited to shelves, tabletops, narrow wall spaces or a larger gallery-wall arrangement.
A versatile medium square that can work above a small cabinet, nightstand or compact accent area.
A substantial statement size for a console, dresser, fireplace or smaller sofa wall.
An oversized, dramatic scale designed to anchor a large wall and create a strong focal point.
Before You Choose, Check These Details
- Measure the available wall space rather than estimating it by eye.
- Consider the width of the sofa, console, bed or cabinet beneath the artwork.
- Include the frame in your final measurements.
- Make sure the artwork feels connected to the furniture rather than floating too high above it.
- Leave the tape in place for a day so you can view it in different lighting and from multiple angles.
Do Not Be Afraid to Go Larger
Large artwork often feels intimidating when you are looking at the dimensions online. On an open wall, however, generous scale usually looks more polished and intentional than several undersized pieces scattered across the space.
Taping the dimensions first gives you the confidence to choose a size that truly suits the room rather than defaulting to the smallest, safest option.
